Stuart was a Des Moines, Iowa heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) engineer and inventor. He operated an HVAC supply business in Des Moines. Working as a manufacturer's agent he acquired 13 patents on heating and cooling devices. He led an active social life and was a member of several Des Moines clubs including the Hermit Club, the Des Moines Club and the Des Moines Pioneer Club.
